Strange sensation in the back of the throat

The various unpleasant manifestations of Helicobacter can be described here. Remember however that the great majority of persons with Hp have no symptoms that they are aware of and consider themselves normal.

Strange sensation in the back of the throat

Post by Andreas »

Hello,

Here is my story,

Since last year in September, I've been having stomach problems that all started with some stomach pain during the summer that seemed not that offensive but proved to be more then that when without any other symptoms I felt really week and lightheaded. After a visit at the hospital I learned that I had stomach bleeding probably from a untreated gastritis. I started a 1 month PPI treatment and radically changed my diet which all seemed to be working fine, stomach pain seemed to be getting better and better as well I had some nausea but that also slowly went away.
All seemed to be working fine when in November, suddenly I had a severe state of indigestion, I felt that I had food up to my through, I couldn't eat almost anything because if I at the smallest amount of food it made me feel really full. As well, all of this was accompanied by a strange sensation in the back of my throat, It's not a taste in my mouth but just a strange feeling that is present only in the upper back part of my throat. As I was feeling worse and worse I made a endoscopy which showed to healed scares on the duoden and a minor gastritis. As well, the helicobacter pylori test from the endoscopy came back positive. The doctor who performed the endoscopy told me that probably most of the symptoms wore from the bacteria and the antibiotics treatment should do the job. I started the triple therapy and I felt better then ever, during the treatment besides a strange taste in my mouth I felt really well . As soon as I finished the treatment, stomach pain started again, some nausea, i felt really weak and had some states of depression. With a strict diet most of the symptoms are disappearing and now I only have this strange sensation in the back of my throat that sometimes come after one or two hours after eating and sometimes comes after I don't eat during 4-5 hours. I thought that it could be GERD but a strict diet does not change anything
The strange thing is that during the pantroprazol treatment there was no change and the most strangest thing was that as soon as I stopped the PPI treatment surprisingly I felt better, now a big difference but noticeable. Now I am two weeks off any stomach medication and a only have some occasional pain when not eating for 4-5 or more hours, also in the morning until I eat, and this strange sensation in the back of my throught which is better without PPI but still does not subside. I also have for the last few days when I lay on my back at night the sensation of having food until my throat and the sensation of swallowing all the time.
The strange sensation on my throat is always calmed when eating and comes back 1-2 hours after eating in some days. Sometimes it starts after drinking water.
Do helicobacter pylori symptoms last for a long time after the treatment? I finished the treatment 1 month ago. Could it be GERD what I am experiencing?
I am taking the breath test next week to see if the bacteria was taken care of but I am sure it was :D we have to think positive :D
Thank you in advance for the help and sorry for the long post,
All the best,

strange indeed. I can only part of your question. In terms of recovery after antibiotic treatment, some people take months. it depends on the severity of the damage done by H. pylori. it takes time for the stomach to recover back to normal.

is it GERD? if there is any significant damage done by GERD, it should be reported in your endoscopy report. Usually it can be "treated" by taking PPI.

you mentioned that you are going to do a breath test next week? i hope you have stopped PPI for at least 2-3 weeks. or else, you probably should wait 2-3 weeks before the breath test.

Thank you for the quick response,

In the endoscopy report it was written that I had a normal looking esophagus. As well during my PPI treatment, I was prescribed Controloc, the sensation in the back of my throat was I could say worse but not a huge difference. I don't have any burning, I just have this liquid and strange sensation and as well i forgot to mention above, I have some air coming back usually when I raise myself from bed or from sitting down.

I had a mistake in the last post, I finished my antibiotics treatment almost two months ago and I didn't take any PPI for the last two weeks as I could actually say that I feel better without then.
What really worries me is that i can't put my finger on this strange sensation on my throat, I eliminated all foods that could potentially cause harm and I could say that in the last one month and a half i didn't allow myself anything that is on the "black list" mostly out of desperation to finally pass over this.
This sensation has no pattern, i quit smoking, i don't drink coffee, I only eat fish and non acidic vegetables and fruits and I drink lots of gastric tea. Even with this diet there seems to be no difference with the sensation on my throat.
Monday I am doing the breath test, I will keep you updated.

Thank you again for you answer,
Best.

thumbs up for quitting smoking and drinking.

Feel better without PPI? Although I have not seen any studies done on this, but I always suspect that when people take PPI, the stomach becomes neutralize and all sort of bacteria can grow there. So, patient "solve" h. pylori problem but there is other problem rising. nevertheless, i am hoping to get involve in similar study like this in future.

lots of gastric tea? I am not sure what is it. but my believe is always, anything too much is not good. even drinking too much water can kill. Diet wise, I have not seen any sensible report about what sort of food should be avoided. nevertheless, i know that antibiotics can be less effective if your stomach is acidic. that's one main reason to take PPI together with those antibiotics. therefore, I am not sure about your acidic vegetable theory. Some people suggest to avoid gluten food. again, no scientific publication was made on that. anyway, no conclusion was made about food to avoid. generally you can eat whatever food you like, except alcohol, during the treatment.

Hello,

I have good news:D ,I did the helicobacter test today and it came back negative, I couldn't believe it, especially that last night was kind of strange, I never had heartburn and last night I ate kind of late( 10:30) some boiled pears and when I woke up this morning I felt like my throat was on fire but it passed in a few hours.
I didn't do the breath test because it was a really long wait until I could get scheduled and I made the stool test, they told me that it is almost as accurate as the breath test and the person who made the test told me that my result was really really negative and with this result i shouldn't worry about still having it.
Should I still do a breath test? I really want to be sure as I still have some symptoms even though they are improving, in a slow I could even say very slow pace but they are improving.
As well, today of happiness I kind of exaggerated a little bit with some foods that I didn't really eat for a very long while and some of my symptoms appeared but tomorrow I will come back to normal and start introducing gradually some more foods into my diet but today I couldn't help myself :D
Wish everyone all the best,

stool test is accurate. i believe you have successfully eradicated your H. pylori. now you just need to wait for your stomach to recover back to normal.

:)

happy for you.

Hello,

Two days after my stool test for helicobacter pylori, my test for candida also came back and surprisingly it came back positive. The doctor who made the analysis told me that it was a very low positive but still enough to come out as positive. Could this explain some of my symptoms? especially the fact that with PPI there was no difference or it was even worse?
I currently started a course of treatment for candida with one Diflucan 100mg/day for 5 days.
Hope this will work.

Hello
I just found this forum. I am in the 5th week after my treatment for h pylori ended. I was retested 2 weeks later via a stool antigen test which came back negative. YAY! Some of my symptoms are still here. They are really light though, some days they are better then others. I have ones like you with the funny feeling in the throat (not helped by any medication), and every now and again burning in my upper abdomen. I had an endoscopy last tuesday on the 22nd and all my GI doc saw was mild gastritis. My throat problem seems to get worse about an hour after I eat too. But the weird feeling in my throat is always there, just sometimes its worse then others.
I do know that symptoms from this pest last for a long time after treatment, since their still here I can't help but worry something else is wrong. I just want to be back to my normal self already!! lol
How are you feeling now? Any improvement? I feel I am on the road to recovery but I hate how slow it seems.
Ps. I also felt better once I stopped taking a PPI after my treatment.
