Does diet make any difference in treatment?

The cure of Hp usually requires antibiotics. Other things have been tried and have a weaker effect.

Does diet make any difference in treatment?

Post by cartz »

Hello,

Thanks for the great site.

I've tested positive for Helicobacter pylori (blood test) and today started the Nexium Hp7 treatment (I'm in Tasmania, Australia).

I've read lots of conflicting information about diet and what encourages or discourages the bacteria and symptoms. There are lots of suggestions to eat a lowish carb diet so as not to feed the bacteria which seems to make sense. There are lots of suggestions to avoid fats (can't do that if you go low carb). Given part of the treatment is a PPI should I limit my protein?

I'm very confused. I did a search on this forum before posting and there was a suggestion to return to your normal diet after treatment but I couldn't find anywhere suggesting what you should be eating differently during treatment.

I am gluten and dairy intolerant so avoid those foods anyway. But should I be aiming for more rice, fruit and vegetables or more fat, protein and vegetables?

Or is it totally irrelevant what I eat?

Also (not diet related), I see that it is recommended for a breath test 4 weeks after treatment. I assume this can't be done at my regular doctor's clinic and I would need to be referred somewhere. Is that correct?

Thanks,

cartz.

hi,

i think just eat what you feel comfortable. if you ate fat rich food and feel sick, just avoid them. some people comment that gluten food may make the symptom worse, but since you are not taking any, so should be alright. so, just eat whatever you like.

as for the breath test, yes, you can do it in any GP. you may be able to find a test kit online. check out tri-med that supply them.

Thanks very much for your reply.

All foods seem to have the same negative results so at least now I'll just put up with them and not worry if there is something I should be focussing on diet-wise.

Thanks,

cartz.
