Hi Doc,
Just how much antacid s enough for the first round of treatment? I have been put on amoxil, Klacid and Nuxum HP for 7 days. I went to the emergency 2 days ago and the doc there said that the recurrence of symptoms could be due to the fact that I wasnt put on an antacid after the antibiotics treatment....how true is that?
ALso one doc says that he thinks the bloating, loss of appetite and constipation could actually not be related to H.P even though I got well after the treatment for about a week before it all came back again...

Re: How Much an-acid is enough?
Hi,
some antibiotics are sensitive to acid. look at this slide below, it summarized the effect of antibiotics at different pH.
http://img.medscape.com/slide/migrated/ ... lide18.gif
amoxicillin and chlarithromycin are both quite sensitive to acid and have a half life of less than 5 hrs. whereas, other antibiotics such as metronidrozole is not as sensitive, with half life is about 100 hrs at pH 1.2.
in your case, i think you've got a resistant strain and probably need another set of antibiotics. the first set kill off majority of them and the resistant one just grow back through time. try another sets of treatment and see how it goes.

I had no idea that some antibiotics were sensitive to acid. This was an enlightening post and will help to be careful about this fact when I take an antibiotic the next time!! It's good to read informative post like this that we can do our little bit to help get better soon.
