HP Treatment : Side effects and nutrition

Hi,

I've been diagnosed with Hp and I am currently under treatment. I need to take twice a day : Prevacid (Lanprazole) 30mg; Biaxin Bid (Clarithromycin) 500mg, and Amoxicillin (Amoxicillin Trihydrate) 2x500mg; all this for 14 days. When I started the antibiotics, I felt tired and slow. Unfortunately, I got my periods the day after and, with the cramps, I got really sick. The pharmacist said that the pills for the cramps could be taken while taking the antibiotics. Rapidly, the side effects of the pills became really severe (nausea, vomiting, constipation, fever, etc, etc). I got all the side effects on the list the pharmacist gave me when I bought the medicines. After 5 days, the side effects diminished but I still feel tired, sleepy and sometimes get headaches and high temperature.

Now, I only have three days left for the treatment and I'm seriously wondering if the side effects are a sign that the antibiotics are working (or not!?!?), doing their job, and being efficient. Is it because the antibiotics are fighting the bacteria that I'm so tired and sleepy. I cannot work or do my daily tasks normally. I'm so easily exhausted and I feel it in my back (my back sore) and I constantly need to lay down. I should have stop these antibiotics at the firs side effects?

My second concern is about my nutrition... Is there food that I need to avoid, especially while taking the antibiotics? Like milk and other dairy products? Before being diagnosed, I went to a naturopath who gave me homoeopathic pills and put me on a diet : no diary products, no gluten, no acid fruits... I felt a certain improvement, but I could feel that the symptoms were still there, I still felt sick. When I did the blood test for Hp, I was tested for gluten allergy as well. The results for gluten was negative. However, when I eat diary products or normal bread and pasta (wheat based), I feel even more bloating. while I'm taking the treatment, my stomach is huge, a really uncomfortable bloating (but I still try to eat gluten-free and no diary products). Is all this a sign that these antibiotics are not working for me (bloating, side effects and even stomach burning and burping)?

Please help me understand all this. I would so much want the first line antibiotics to work! After all this pain and harsh side effects and the high price of the Hp Pack (triple therapy pack), it NEED to work!!!

I try to keep faith and be optimistic, but it's not obvious....

you did the right thing in continuing the treatment. Stopping the therapy half way only give chance for antibiotic resistance to develop. You will then need to eat stronger antibiotics.

There is nothing really you need to avoid eating. Perhaps you should avoid alcohol.

Nevertheless, your side effects are common. Only a few more days, hopefully you can go through without problem. after your treatment, do get a follow up breath test to confirm the eradication.

I would like to know if the bloating will go away only after the medication. I mean, how long will I carry this unconfortable feeling. In other terms, usually, the symptoms take time to fade out? Until how long after ...?

Secondly, how long should I wait after taking the antibiotics to go for the breath test. My doctor wants to see me after two months. Can I do the breath test before that to know for certain?

the symptom should slowly subside after medication. if symptom persist, you'll have to wait for the breath test result to see if the treatment is successful.

you need to wait at least 1 month without any medication before you can do breath test.
