I've been having stomach cramps, back pain, different types of stools and all sorts of pain for the last 2 years. I had a stool test and blood test came up negative for H.pylori but came up positve with a breath test so doc put me on a 7 day treatment of nexium hp7 triple therapy. Tested a month later and it was positve still but I felt better, 2 months later symptoms came back but different ones with nausea and bad pain in stomach and abdomen so bad that if I push on it, it hurts. I went for a gastroscopy and came up with chronic gastritis and doc said H.pylori can be causing gastritis so now I'm back on nexium hp7 triple therapy twice a day plus metronidazole 3 times a day for 14 days. First couple of days of treatment had diarrhea but after first week felt really good, now I'm on to my second week and I'm getting that inflammation in my stomach and abdomen again! How long does this last? And does it get better. If H.pylori is the cause of chronic gastritis and the meds are working than shouldn't my symptoms have disappeared?
Thanks Steve.

Re: Chronic gastritis
The recovery of the stomach is depending on the severity of the damage done. you probably have more damage and may take longer time to recover. Anyway, the root of the gastritis is H. pylori and so I recommend you repeat the breath test one month after your current treatment and see if it is eradicated.
Re: Chronic gastritis
Thanks for the reply. Hate pylori!
Re: Chronic gastritis
A very good question. There are many people in the world who are infected and asymptomatic. Since there is some new research suggested that it may be a good bacteria that maintain our weight and keep out of allergies, it is hard to decide if we should get rid of it, in the case of asymptomatic.

Re: Chronic gastritis
I'm having on and off gastritis symptoms after successful eradication of h. pylori. But compared to the constant burning I had prior to taking quadruple therapy - I'm quite better. If I don't overeat, avoid certain foods and don't stress much and I'm fine. So as Helico_expert suggested - if you clear yourself of the bacteria then you'll have to wait some time for your stomach to recover. Adjusting your diet, adding some vitamins and herbal supplements may be beneficial.
Re: Chronic gastritis
I've had chronic gastritis following H Pylori infection for about 10 months now. Mine doesn't sound as severe as yours, but it is constant. I have burning in my stomach and heartburn all day most days. If I eat things I shouldn't, I get nauseous and cramps sometimes. I've severely restricted my diet (no fat, no acid, no flavor). I avoid citrus, any meats with fat (I can tolerate chicken breast cooked plain and some white fish like tilapia, cod, or whiting), coffee, most teas (I can handle a little green tea), sauces, sugar, nuts, anything else with fat (butter, oil, etc.), garlic, onions, spices. If I eat any of those things, symptoms get a lot worse. Good foods are rice, bread, quinoa, pretzels (some people can't handle salt though), sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, carrots, peas, green beans, broccoli (bad for some), and other veggies. Good fruits are apples, pears, cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew melon, and maybe grapes. Stress is also a noticeable trigger. When I went on vacation, it got quite a bit better, but came back when I returned to work and regular life. I don't think it even takes extreme stress to trigger, it's like minimal stress affects you more than it affects other people. I've tried slippery elm (herbal remedy) but it didn't do anything. I'm currently on dexlansoprazole (PPI), it worked great at the beginning, but its effectiveness has really gone down, I'm not sure if and what it's doing any more, and it's really expensive with my insurance! I also take tums to control acid, and zantac sometimes as well. I'm hoping to outlast it by good diet. Exercise helps a little, but it just seems like it's not going to go away until it's ready.
