I have thought a little bit about reasons of failures in my case... why antibiotics where so useless... I have used water or tee to swallow tablets... but during day I drink a flavoured water... I dont like to drink pure water... and now I was looking at contetnt of that flavoured water... and it contain citric acid, btw most of drinks contain some ... I have measured ph of that water and it was 2-2,5, I have also measure a few aother similar drinks like tonic , and some juice drinks almost all of them have citric acid and ph from range 2-3...
I'm really suprised of that pH level because I have expectet pH of something about 5-6... even orange juice have pH under 3...
Do somebody know, how citric acid can effect on eradication... low pH seems to decrease eradication (generally but still I found conflicting data) rate but that pH come from HCl what about others acid which are very common used in foods and drinks... I mean citric acid , acetic acid , lactic acid, ascorbic acid... What more when I was on that ppi blockers I always want to eat and drink something really acidic... I try avoid it... but I'm suprissed that common drinks are so acidic... even thougt they do not taste acidic at all... Is there any possible impact on eradication rate... I have from my doctors only heard to avoid smoking and alcohol... one of them is opinion that amount of citric acid which is in drinks would have no impact... I\m not so sure as that pH level was so low...

P.S I have just measured my tap water pH 5,0, so acidic

Re: reasons of failures
Hello,
I don't think any of these drinks have an impact on the eradication of H.pylori. The stomach is, by itself, a very acetic environment. The most common reason for failure is resistance to the antibiotics. If you have already tried different treatments, you might have to check which antibiotic your H.pylori strains are sensitive to. Talk about it with your GP.

Re: reasons of failures
so why ppi are used... they have some direct effect on HP...? bactericidal? or only indirect by elevating pH level and therefore providing better enviroment for antibiotics... ?Helico_apprentice wrote:Hello,

Re: reasons of failures
I dont think PPI has direct effect on H. pylori. PPI only increase the pH in the stomach. At the moment, the PPI effect is only to increase the efficacy of antibiotics and prevent further damage from acid to stomach wall.

and when I use drinks which have pH of 2-2.5 i will lower intragastric pH and therefore influence antibiotics effectivness ...?Helico_expert wrote:I dont think PPI has direct effect on H. pylori.
