1 vs 7 day treatment for H. Pylori are the same?

Hi All,

Need your help. Is one day treatment for H. Pylori effective. As per below it says it is as good is 7 day treatment. Please let me know if you have info/advice/suggestions. I want to try the one day treatment. Here is the info for it.

The one day regimen consisted of two tablets of 262 mg bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol), 500 mg metronidazole (Flagyl), and 2 g amoxicillin (suspension), all taken four times over the course of the day, along with 60 mg lansoprazole (Prevacid) taken once.

the risk is, if failed, then there is a chance that your h. pylori becomes resistant to the antibiotic and you'll have to take another set of treatment. Then again, we have seen patients stopped treatment half way through because of the unpleasant side-effects. they turned out cured too.

in conclusion, i would stick to the 7 days treatment unless you dont mind experimenting on yourself and have to invest some time to investigate the outcome.

Hi All,
I have taken amoxicillin before. I dont know what this could mean? Will the treatment be less effective? I looked around the net, and no treatment had a 95% cure it. Most of the 7 day ones were below 90%. What makes this treatment work if it works better then the 7 day treatment? Is this a all or nothing treatment? If you have compliance issues like me, I don't know if there is a better options out there?

a lot of antibiotics like amoxycillin only works on active growing bacteria. because, the mechanism of the antibiotic is to inhibit the bacteria from forming cell wall. so, when the bacteria cells divide, and there is no cell wall, it lyse and die.

now, H. pylori is a very slow growing bacteria. unlike other organism like E. coli that needs ~1 hr duplication time, H. pylori probably need ~3-4 hrs to duplicate (my speculation, no reference). as a result, i suspect the efficiency of such antibiotic to work on slow growing bacteria for only 1 day.

do read about antibiotic activation at low pH and PPI effect after 1 day ingestion.

Hiya, folks! Sorry for the somewhat late reply, but I was looking up info on ulcers and just so happened to stumble upon this interesting conversation.

I wasn't aware that H.Pylori was a slow growing bacteria -- but I guess it would only make sense seeing as ulcers are, in themselves, progressive. Speaking of ulcers, I have a question for you all! What is the difference between an ulcer or acid reflux? The reason I ask is because I'm getting heartburn mixed with a burning sensation in my esophagus. While these symptoms match up with acid reflux, I've often wondered if it was an ulcer too!

Also, since we're on the subject: does having acid reflux or an ulcer increase your risk of getting gastrointestinal cancers like esophageal cancer? If this is the case and I happen to fall ill, what treatments are available? I've heard a bit about proton therapy and it being a more focused treatment. Would they cover such conditions? Hi,

Stomach ulcer and reflux are different things. Ulcer is like damaged tissue on your stomach wall which unable to produce mucous to protect it against acid and when acid reached, you feel the pain.

reflux is where acid reaches your esophagus and because your esophagus has no protection mucous, your esophagus got burnt. also known as GERD/GORD.

unfortunately, the only way to confirm if you have ulcer or GERD is by endoscopy examination.

do they lead to Cancer? I believe they do. Because when the cells died, new cells generate. the acid kill the cells increase the rate of new cells forming. and such high replacement of new cells is when error happens and create cancer cells.

one diagnosed with GERD or ulcer are recommended to be put on PPI until damage is heal.

Well, this 1 day treatment idea sounds like it is still in the experimental stage. If I were you, I would stick with the standard treatment that has been proven to be most effective. If it ends up not working, then you might want to try some more innovative treatments recommended by those with expertise in the field.
