Gastric Bypass patient HP positive?

I am a 46 year old woman who underwent Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass 5 years ago. I grew up on a mink farm. Of course getting fecal matter in my mouth happened a time or 2. I have been doing alot of checking and found that HP in mink is very common. At 17 years old I was diagnosed with a peptic uler. I have had mild stomach problems most of my life. My gastric surgery went fine, nothing abnormal was revealed. Within weeks of my surgery I developed alot of pain and discomfort, my GI surgeon said my new pouch was "sensitive" put me on famotidine 2x daily forever. Last february I noticed a sensation of having small pill caught in my throat. Initially it would go away, then the "object" size grew and continued growing and the sensation quit going away several months ago. I went to a dr. who immediately sent me to a Ear Nose Throat dr. said he found something on my vocal chords. The E.N.T. scoped me and found swelling in my throat. He only went down a short ways as the swelling was considerable. He sent me to my GI surgeon in Oregon (I now live in Knoxville Tennessee.) I flew back to see my dr. she only examined me and ordered a series of the normal gastric bypass test but included a HP blood test. She was concerned it was either esophogeal cancer or ulcers. I went back to Tennessee to have the blood work done. I am now waiting the results. I am concerned about the accuracy of the blood test verses breath. Has there been any experience in your foundation with bypass patients that you may know of? Because of my surgery and things being "rewired" could the ulcers be higher up in my throat? My GI surgeon put me on karafate and prevacid.

Hi Gear,
According to me, you must have got ulcer but as you never updated your thread, people here don't know what happened actually. I would like to know what happened after you got your test results? Did you find it positive or negative? It will clear out doubts in my mind. Waiting for your update (If there is any).

Your situation sounds a bit unique and somewhat complicated in comparison to a typical helico diagnosis. The gastric bypass as well as your interaction with mink feces presents a patient history that multiple doctors might need to look at to gain good understanding. A team of
doctors in indianapolis, where I'm from, is what I would look for at my hospital. Consult as many experts as you can and allow them to form a smart treatment plan for your unique situation.

If you have had the stomach rearranged then breath tests probably won't work for Hp. You would need to rely on Stool antigen and serology, or careful biopsy study during endoscopy. If these tests come back negative then it is unlikely that you have Hp. Most likely you will need to be managed by a gastroenterologist with an endoscopy to look at the stomach remnant each time you are unwell. I know this can be difficult after surgery. In most cases we can exclude H.pylori.

Congratulation for your gastric bypass if it really went fine without any problem.
I'm so glad for you because I've heard about gastric bypass that it contain so many complications like infection, weight regain, clots and so many side effects after surgery.
Congratulation again.
