I have both an endoscopy and a colonoscopy scheduled for next week. I want to make sure that I don't do anything that could interfere with the testing for Helicobacter pylori (H.
basket random pylori). I'm particularly concerned about the colonoscopy prep—does the preparation process affect the H. pylori testing in any way? Thank you!

colonoscopy prep will not affect the testing of H. pylori.
make sure you remind your gastroenterologist to collect stomach biopsies for rapid urease test and histology.

Colonoscopy prep won’t affect Helicobacter pylori testing. Just make sure your doctor collects stomach biopsies for the rapid urease test and histology.

From what my GI told me, the colonoscopy prep itself usually doesn’t interfere with H. pylori testing during an endoscopy. The bigger things that can affect results are antibiotics, bismuth (like Pepto-Bismol), and PPIs/acid reducers taken before the test.

Definitely follow the prep instructions exactly, but if you’re taking any stomach medications it’s worth calling the clinic and asking whether you should stop them before the procedure.

From what I understand as well, the colonoscopy prep itself usually doesn’t affect H. pylori testing during an endoscopy.
What can really interfere are things like antibiotics, bismuth (like Pepto-Bismol), and PPIs/acid-reducing meds taken before the test.
Still, it’s best to follow the clinic’s instructions exactly, and if you’re on any stomach meds, definitely check with them beforehand just to be safe.

That's a great question. From what I understand, the colonoscopy prep itself typically shouldn't affect H. pylori testing, but certain medications—especially antibiotics, bismuth products (like Pepto-Bismol), and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)—can influence test accuracy. It's probably worth checking with your gastroenterologist to make sure you've followed any pre-test instructions specific to the type of H. pylori test they're planning to perform.
