Allergic to Penicillin and Previous Flagyl Use

Im kinda freaking out here. Im allergic to Penecillin and it looks like I may have Pylori (endoscopy tomorrow). Some 20 years ago I was prescribed Flagyl for an undefined "parasite"

Would it be possible for me to have a reoccurance 20 years later - and if so - wouldnt the bacteria be resistant to Flagyl?

Sorry for the freakout but anxiety is through the roof.

20 years is a long time. The resistant strain may have gone. The theory is that the mutant (or resistant strain) is usually less fit than the wild type (sensitive strains). When there is no selection pressure (influence of antibiotics), the wild type should out grow the mutant.

It's ok to have allergy to penicillin. There are many more antibiotics you can try. But make sure Bismuth is one of them.

Thank you for your response. Much appreciated. It is my plan (if positive) to test for the Penicillin allergy. (Mom always said I was since I was a kid but could never remember why)

If not allergic - id rather go Amoxicillin first.

agree. many penicillin allergy test is false positive. especially when you are young. some people can out grow the sensitivity.

Amoxicillin is a good choice of antibiotic against H. pylori because it is very very very difficult for H. pylori to become resistant to it. And since it is very safe. even pregnant women and children can take it. So you can have big dose of it to boost the killing of H. pylori.

Last question on this. Say I do a challenge for amoxicillin on Friday - and it is successful, would I then need to start the treatment asap? So there is no break between when I took the amoxicillin and treatment?

Thanks in advance.

you can start treatment anytime.
I assume your allergic test is skin prick test.
sometimes they also collect your blood for the allergy testing.
if you are not allergic to penicillin, then you can have amoxicillin in your treatment.

Allergy test is skin - and then you actually take amoxicillin and they watch u for an hour.
So wondering if would need to immediately start treatment after taking amoxiicillin.

Doctors not prescribing drugs til Thursday - a day after I take amoxicillin to see if allergic. Would it be a problem to wait a couple of days after initial amoxicillin dose to start actual treatment?

hmmm... good question. maybe you should ask your doctor if he thinks that's alright. Even though Amoxicillin resistance is rare, I wouldnt recommend to stop for a couple of days and start again. It's like priming the bacteria to get ready for a big fight.
