Feeling worse after antibiotics :(

Hi,

I was diagnosed with this bacteria in April after having indigestion for 2 weeks and losing some weight. I was prescribed the antibiotics but decided to wait and finally took them 3 weeks ago after another 5 episodes of indigestions (each one lasting for around a week). I tool claromycin and lansoprazone for 1 week and amoxicilne for 2 weeks, but today I feel much worse than before starting... yesterday dinner was bad (my main problem is that dinner takes so long to digest that I cant go to bed till 3-4 in the morning, despite eating no later than 7) and today everything i eat makes me sick again..

I didn't feel any side effects (apart from some fatigue) and the first days I was feeling fine (very hungry at the beginning), but it god bad towards the end.

Is this normal after the antibiotics? I've been doing some reading and looks like antibiotics might not work in my case (I believe i have non-ulcerous dispepsia).

Should I go back to the doctor?

Thanks, I'm very depressed and don't know what to do :(

Hi, sorry for the slow response. I think it is important to finish the antibiotics that you were given. Then wait for 4 weeks and go back to your doctor for a follow up check up. There is no need to worry now. It is better to find out if you still have H. pylori after treatment. If yes, then you will just need to focus on the healing. If no, then we discuss about the second therapy.

Thanks for your reply.. it's been almost 2 weeks now since and I finish and I just keep getting worse, so not very hopeful that the treatment worked. I'm also not convinced about going back to the dr because if I still have the bacteria they will give me more antibiotics and I don't want to take them anymore. :(

My only hope is that this is a side effect of the antibiotics.. but will wait the whole 4 weeks.

Hi, I am sorry for what happened. Sometimes, it is because the antibiotics wipe out all your good bacteria and the bad bacteria happened to dominate the guts faster. Perhaps you want to try probiotics to help replenish the good bacteria?

I have half a glass of Kefir everyday, started about a month ago, I think this has probiotics and they are better than the ones that comes in pills or drinks? While I took the antibiotics I also had some other probiotics I bought at the chemist, but don't have access to these anymore... ( I buy them in Spain and I'm in the UK now)

Could this just be a reaction to the antibiotics? It does feel exactly as it did on each episode before..

Hi, so it has been a while. Have you check if your H. pylori has been eradicated?

The results came back negative, so no bacteria. I'm still not feeling well though.. I have to be very careful with what i eat and last friday I got really ill again because I went out and had ONE drink... I guess the bacteria was not responsible for this :(

I am sorry to hear that you are still not well. But it's good news that you are free of H. pylori now. At least you know your stomach will not get worse, only better.

Some people does longer time to return to normal. Have you consider checking if you are allergic to certain type of food? eg. gluten?

Your illness has been for quite a while. My advice, do not take it lightly and consult some other doctor for correct diagnosis.
