How long were you on acid blocker?

I was diagnosed with h. pylori about a month ago. I was on a 10day course of antibiotics along with 10 days of an acid blocker. Within days of starting, I felt better - physically and emotionally! Now, over two weeks after finishing my medication, my ulcer pain is back. I am taking the h. pylori breath test tomorrow, but is it possible to be h. pylori negative and still have the ulcer/ulcer symptoms? After reading it seems like a lot of people were on some type of anti-acid for longer than 10 days....was that not long enough? I fear I am resistant to the antibiotics my doctor gave me (years of antibiotic use thanks to a useless dermatologist.) But was curious if you could have one (the pain/ulcer) without the other (h. pylori) after finishing treatment.

Thank you!

P.S. On another topic, is there danger in undergoing an elective surgery if h. pylori positive?

Hi, it is possible to still have the symptoms after treatment. Some lucky people feel good immediately after treatment. Some take months before feeling better. One member in this forum took him a whole year to go back to normal. Then again, I would like to remind you that most people here are with symptoms. Many people who feel great immediately never bother coming to the website. So this website is biased to more symptomatic and patients with lots of difficulty eradicating H. pylori.

In your case, you just finished your 10 days treatment, maybe it's not a good idea to get the test so quickly. Because it is more likely to give you a false negative result. We usually ask patients to do the test 4 weeks after treatment.

If acid blocker makes you feel better, you can ask your doctor to give you more. If you truly have ulcers, the guideline is to take a month of PPI or until ulcer is healed.

in regards to your elective surgery, I dont think it's a problem. You'll need to take antibiotics after the surgery to prevent complication anyway. Perhaps you can discuss with your doctor about it. He may have different opinion depending on your overall health and side effects.
