Hello Helico_expert,

I was looking at the forums and see that you have replied to so many folks here. That is such a selfless act.

I am recently diagnosed with HP. My gastro did a EGD scope and couldn't find any inflammation, ulcers or any other growths but he didn't take any biopsies. The stool and blood tests came positive. He then prescribed Omeprazole 20mg - 1 Tablet, Clarithromycin 500mg - 1 Tablet and Amoxicillin 500mg - 2 Tablets, twice a day for 10 days. I see that you are recommending to add Peto-Bismal to the triple therapy. Can I just buy pepto-bismol liquid over the counter and take 30ml twice a day along with Clari and Amoxi? I am in the 3rd day of treatment and have a week to go and I want to add peto-bismol for the coming week. Current side effects are diarrhea and some greenish stool.

Thank you.

I think the key is clarithromycin resistance. if you do not have clarithromycin resistance, your triple therapy will work. However, adding bismuth may increase the chances of HP eradication. There has very little evidence that suggest bismuth actually increase cure rate in combination with triple therapy. Nevertheless, since HP never get resistance to bismuth, you can always try bismuth. In addition, bismuth may reduce the antibiotic associated diarrhea.
