Glad to have found this site. I am in my late 50's and have been in hospital twice in the last three years with irretractable vomiting. Cause was never determined. This last episode was especially severe and was preceded by a two week prescription of augmentin for a dental issue. A urea breath test at a follow-up appt. 3 days later came back positive for H. pylori. Could the heavy dose of augmentin caused this to flare up? I had a duodenal ulcer in my 20's. Is it possible to have harbored this organism for several decades? I was taking Protonix when I took the test and had completed the augmentin only10 days prior. Could either of these cause a false positive? Scheduled to start metronidasole/doxycycline hyclate (with omeprazole and pepto bismol) therapy tomorrow. I want to be sure I am doing the right thing. Thank you so much for this site, this is a miserable problem.

yes, you can carry this organism for a life time. In japan, children as young as 2 years old is already found infected. similar studies have been done else where and showed suggested that it is commonly acquired at young age and less likely to be infected at adult age. most people dont even know they are infected.

these drug usually lead to false negative. So i believe you are positive.

metronidasole/doxycycline hyclate (with omeprazole and pepto bismol) therapy is a good combination. remember to confirm the eradication one month after the treatment by doing breath test. remember not to take PPI for at least a month before breath/stool test.

This is the guideline how to use breath test. In general, you should avoid all acid reducing drug to avoid false negative.
