Third treatment attempt at h. pylori eradication

Dear Dr. Marshall,
Today I began a new round of antibiotic treatment for my persistent h. pylori infection (two previous unsuccessful therapy attempts due to antibiotic resistance) based on an antibiotic sensitivity. I am currently taking omeprazole in combination with doxycycline and metronidazole for ten days, followed by twenty days of omeprazole therapy. I am tolerating omeprazole and doxycycline, however, metronidazole is causing me dizziness all throughout the day. Is there something that can be done to minimize this side effect? Is this a side effect which will resolve as I continue taking the medication or should I discontinue the medication? I am a busy mother of four and I need to be totally alert while taking any medication. What should I do? Joanna Panopoulos

Dear Dr. Marshall,
I wanted to happily announce that I have finally been cured of H. Pylori for good after seven miserable years of suffering and two previous treatment failures due to microbial resistance. Following an antibiotic sensitivity test my physician recommended therapy with metronidazole, doxycycline and omeprazole. I only ended up taking metronidazole for one day with doxycycline (I couldn't function with the severe dizziness that the metronidazole caused) and with the doctor's order I proceeded to take doxycycline 100mg for sixteen days along with omeprazole 20mg twice a day. I then continued to take omeprazole alone for an additional twenty days. I took a stool antigen test last week and it came back negative!!! Words cannot express the joy that I felt when I received my test results. I am also going to take the urea breath test in a couple of weeks just to be definitely sure that it's totally eradicated. I am living proof that even single antibiotic therapy along with a PPI can cure H. Pylori. I hope that my experience will be a message of hope and an alternative cure for patients who have suffered as myself and have difficulty in eradicating this horrible infection due to antibiotic resistance. Sincerely, Joanna Panopoulos, Rph.
