Hi I have recently had an endoscopy which showed Barrets. I had previously had a breath test for helio but it came back negative ( reading of 49). Despite major dietry changes - no wheat, dairy, which caused my symptoms of pain at end of esophagus in the first -place,I'm still getting abdonminal pain. Dr now suggesting reading was close enough to positive as I had had some herbal ixtures in previous week. Now on 7 day hp treatment but want to know if the Barrets could have been caused by the hp as ulcers are?

From my understanding, there is little to no association between HP and Barrett's esophagus. In fact, some recent studies even suggest a inverse relationship between HP and Barrett's esophagus. Meaning, HP protects you from getting Barrett's esophagus.

Anyway, I think the correlation is still not strong enough. More studies are needed. Perhaps you should go for a second follow up breath test?

Thanks for the reply. Yes the research was interesting. Feeling so much better on the antibiotics and will get another test done a week after I finish them.

you'll need at least 3 weeks without antibiotics and PPI before any test to check for H. pylori infection.
