Hi, I now have quadruple treatment, took it for two days and felt really unwell, ended up in bed for the day. I had severe neausia, My doctor said to stop tablets for two days, then restart. If this continues, I have to stop the treatment and go and have a camera down. I cant believe it has taken me three months to get this second treatment and it is making me ill. I am allergic to penicillian and my options are limited, feel really upset :(

hmmm... i disagree the stopping. try to continue if you can. unless if it is really really really bad. if the bug becomes became resistance to the quadruple therapy that you are taking, you'll have to take even worse drugs.

Hi

I have just review side effects from more than 200 patients. They can be pretty bad. A few people had to stop working during the treatment. And some don't have any side effects. In any case, try to NOT STOP the treatment if you only have minor problems such as nausea, diarrhoea, headache, bad taste in your mouth... It is the only way to eradicate Hp. You should be better after the treatment.

Good luck

Thankyou for your replies, I have restarted and on my second day, (fingers crossed). I have twelve days treatment left, so hope this works, Thanks again, will keep you posted. I was taking metronidazole with my meal, I am now taking it when i have finished my meal, think this is the tablet causing my neausia.

Just keep at it. I felt the same way, and still do a week later.

At last ive finished the medication, is it usual to continue with omeprozole for a couple of weeks? if so how many omeprozole a day for how long? or is the quadrupple treatment for 14 days usually sufficient!

Hi,
I had h pylori in 2007. It was discoverd after an endoscope. I had triple therapy treatment six times, as each time the breath test would come back positive. I was getting really fed up, so I contacted Barry Marshall and was put in touch with one of his collegues. After a few e-mails, I was sent a list of medication to use and passed this on to my doctor. Some of the medication that was suggested was not available in the UK, but we managed to get as near as. I then went on to have another endoscope and breath test which all came back negative much to my delight. Things have been great until recently and I having some similar symptoms as I did in the past. So I was wondering is it possiable to get re-infected with h pylori, I never knew how I got it in the first place. Or is it just a conincidence, that what Im feeling at the moment are some of the same symptoms, but may be something else.

In my personal opinion, true "Re-infection" is possible, but chances are very very low. Why? because H. pylori survive poorly outside human body. It's a very slow growing organism (easy to be out-compete by other faster growing organism) and sensitive to oxygen. Any spices like salt, curry powder, chili, garlic, onion, etc has been shown able to kill H. pylori. So it is not easily transmitted via sharing food.

Nevertheless, I think close fluid contact such as kissing, would have higher chance of transmitting H. pylori (not proven or demonstrated).

So, most of the reported "re-infection" cases are actually treatment failure. A follow up breath test should always be conducted after treatment. That's the only way to find out exactly if your treatment is successful.

Omeprazol is used to reduce the acid in your stomach. Your doctor might ask you to keep taking it if you still have symptoms. However, you have to stop it 4 weeks before you do a new breath test which is essential to validate H. pylori eradication.
