Since having a colonoscopy on 11/22/10, I have had severe indigestion, acid and bile reflux , pain , bloating, burning, nausea. I was given Colyte as a bowel preparation. I feel like my digestive system has been inflamed since that procedure. Then I had an endoscopy 12/20/10 with the results being: negative for H.pylori, gastritis, bile in the stomach I gall bladder removed 15 yrs ago), hiatal hernia. I feel like the prep and procedure inflamed my system and I question the validity of the results for H.pylori. What percentage of false negatives occur with endoscopic biopsies for H.pylori? Has anyone complained of severe indigestion symptoms following the use of Colyte? Is it possible for H.pylori to increase after the bowel prep?

If a biopsy test is negative it is 90% likely to be correct. However, the best backup test is serology. It picks up 90-95% of infections and, if negative, "excludes" recent infection. If positive, then it might be "left over" antibody from the distant past, or it could mean that Hp is still there and the biopsy missed it. So, a positive serology should be double checked by a third test, usually breath test, and then treatment given only if that test is also positive.

i'm an average American citizen, not a medician, and i wonder are serology tests 100% reliable? well, taking into cinsideration there's no onehundredpercent evidence, you can understand me quite well, i believe.

Hi Fredmad,

nothing is 100% accurate. in our collection, the CLOtest is about 95% accurate; the histology is about 95% accurate; when you combine the two, it's about 97% accurate.

serology and stool test have been reported to be 95% accurate too.

Why two tests only 97% accurate? How did you count it?
I think that two test with such high level of accutracy must show at least 99,9%...

97% is based on clinical data. using culture as gold standard.
CLOtest and culture positives are about 95%
Histology and culture positives are about 95%
CLOtest, Histology and culture positives are about 97%

nevertheless, the above data are based on one hospital and about 800 subjects.
