I believe that the elevated stomach acid is the cause of this. Some persons may experience heartburn and stomach discomfort as a result of mastic gum stimulating their stomach acid production.

If mastic gum is having an antimicrobial effect, you could be experiencing a die-off reaction (Herxheimer reaction), which can cause temporary worsening of symptoms as harmful bacteria are killed off
