H. pylori is not the only problem for IBS. It's also a common side effect after antibiotic treatment. The actual reason is unknown. but there is a theory suggesting that all bacteria got wiped out when you take antibiotics and when your normal flora tried to grow back, the bad bacteria dominate before the good bacteria. therefore IBS.

If all bacteria are eradicated, then how can there be bad bacteria left around after eradication treatment for H pylori? Specific bacteria that were not killed by specific anti-Bs? I had Tetracycline and Flagyl. This is what confuses me.

Also: had parasite tests come back negative but only a few parasites were tested. Which ones to test??? With post-pylori problems, there are more questions than answers.

The ONLY person who has agreed with me re: return of bacteria (due to similar symptoms re-emerging after feeling GREAT while on the antiBs), is my Veterinarian! At least he helped me think it through. He has a wealth of knowledge and interest in drugs and interactions not only for four-leggeds).

He thinks there is more of a bacterial component working along with the anti-inflammatory problem with post-H pylori (and those susceptible to IBS) but that medical professionals tend to focus more on the anti-inflammatory than the regrowth of bacteria.

But how do you know?
And what do you do?

IBS is a big problem and is affecting many people. It's not my area of expertise, but to my understanding, there isnt any solid cure for IBS. I believe IBS is caused by multiple factors and each person has a different cause of IBS. It could be bacterial related, parasite, virus, allergies, autoimmune response, and etc.

some IBS patients were treated by antibiotics, some treated by avoiding certain food or drink and some treated by fecal transplant.

is H. pylori related to IBS? i think the answer is no. because it only colonises the stomach and IBS is usually cause by bacterial (or other pathogen) that colonises the intestine (or colon). However, some scientist believes that the toxin produced by H. pylori may pass through the stomach and attack the intestine. but there is no such evidence exist.

My General Practition was even surprised about the diagnoses of Spastic Colon cause he said its usually seen in adolescence and rarely diagnosed at 43 yrs old. Thats why I cant figure out why I got this right before being diagnosed with Hpylori. So Im guessing that I might need to repopulate my gut flora with a FMT to get a hold of this situation. It causes some bad sideeffects. So know Im on Amitriptyline to help with the bad signals the gut sends to brain. Just an awful circumstance since having hpylori. :?

H. pylori is not related to skin disease. However, some people accidentally had their skin disease cured by taking the triple therapy.

After taking medication on the advice of my GP, to kill Helicobacter Pylori. (espmeprazole, amoxicilline, clarithromycine) 7 months ago, I have had many problems. It said not to continue taking it if you had diarrhea but the doctors told me to carry on.

I had NO toilet problems before taking the medication. However since taking them I’ve had IBS, constipation, irregular bowel movements, blood on toilet paper... Because of severe pain I experienced whilst taking the medication, I believe it had caused serious damage to the intestinal flora. I managed to strengthen the gut with a vegan diet and probitoics and saccharomyces boulardii for 8 weeks, but I ate a salad in November that cased severe IBS. For the last 6 weeks I’ve taking more pro-biotics and I eat only cooked vegetables to avoid any problems. I am far from being how I was before taking the meds. Stool tests show that there are no parasites and blood test show no food allergies.

I heard of a similar case, she had the same reaction of diarrhea and pain to the meds. Her endo/colonoscopye revealed that she is now more vulnerable to cancer and ulcers.

I may need to do the endo/colonoscopye exam, to see if this is the case with me too.

This may not be the place to discuss the intestinal flora, but people must be aware of the potential damage these drugs do and can cause.

Are you aware of how the intestinal flora can be repaired from such damage? Some websites say the damage can not be undone.

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your story. It is true that when you take antibiotics, your normal flora may be turned up side down. It worse when you took multiple antibiotics in one go. Unfortunately, that's the only way and the most effective way to get rid of H. pylori.

For most people, the flora will slowly grow back. But for some people, they develop IBS or even ulcerative colitis. This is because when all the good bacteria got wiped out, the bad bacteria happened to dominate the bowels and cause all the problem. I think you did the right thing going back for a further checkup. Hopefully there is nothing serious. If it is bacteria related colitis, another course of antibiotics to reset the system again will do the trick.

Geraint, I'm glad you responded. I have been diagnosed with PI IBS. My Colon spasms and sends bad signals to brain. I have done so many Probiotics it's a shame. I'm on a low dose Antidepressant as well. I pray everyday that I will get healthy again. I'm going to GI on the 15th and even ask If Fecal Matter Transplant will help speed up recovery. Hope you get well. God bless.
