C13 / C14 what is the difference !

Breath tests are the most accurate way of detecting H.pylori without actually having an endoscopy (stomach examination). Breath tests are especially useful after treatment to make sure H.pylori is cured. Urea breath tests are known to be completely harmless. Either C14-urea or C13-urea tests are used. Read about them at the diagnosis section at http://www.helico.com/diag_breath.html where a diagram can be found. C14-urea breath tests use a radioactive tracer but such a tiny amount that it can be used safely at any age. It is a 15 minute test, convenient and inexpensive. The C13-urea test uses a stable isotope of carbon which is also harmless but requires two breath samples and takes about 30 minutes. Both tests have accuracy greater than 90%.

C13 / C14 what is the difference !

Post by kelthuzad »

Hi,
i want to equip my clinical laboratory with the HP urea breath test then i got to think : C13/C14 !!!
i don't seem to find the point behind making c13 or c14 since they seem to have same performance .
i thought at first it was a safety matter (radioactivity of C14 even if it seems negligible)
then after hours of digging i found that C14 is cheaper and easier to handle then C13

anyone have a clue please ????

C13 can be found naturally in your body. That's why you need to measure your baseline before taking the C13 pill. Yes, you are right it is harder to process and without experience, result can easily be messed up. Because C13 is simply everywhere.

C14 on the other hand, it's radioactive, and which in my opinion, less likely to mess up and more accurate. The radiation is very low and it is even approved to be used by pregnant women and children. Nevertheless, it is still a radioactive element and many people is afraid of it.

Let me know if i have not answered your question.

C13 is naturally present in your body. That's why you need to collect two breaths. The first one is to measure the amount of C13 in your body. then you are asked to take the C13 pill and collect the second breath to see if your C13 count increased.

Do you know if to much c 13 is bad for your body and how much is to much? Do you know how long it take to expell from your body and does it come out in your pee or does it come out some other way? Thank You very much.

It really nothing to worry about. C13 is natural. It’s everywhere in the environment. You cannot avoid.

There isn’t a lot of safety information about C13 because it’s generally regarded as safe.

C14 on the other hand, experiment has shown that over 90% of the C14 is breath out within an hour. Almost 99% will be out the body within a day.
