Age for Breath testing

Breath tests are the most accurate way of detecting H.pylori without actually having an endoscopy (stomach examination). Breath tests are especially useful after treatment to make sure H.pylori is cured. Urea breath tests are known to be completely harmless. Either C14-urea or C13-urea tests are used. Read about them at the diagnosis section at http://www.helico.com/diag_breath.html where a diagram can be found. C14-urea breath tests use a radioactive tracer but such a tiny amount that it can be used safely at any age. It is a 15 minute test, convenient and inexpensive. The C13-urea test uses a stable isotope of carbon which is also harmless but requires two breath samples and takes about 30 minutes. Both tests have accuracy greater than 90%.

Age for Breath testing

Post by JesLagos »

My daughter is 11 years old and has had anxiety since she was a toddler. Last year she was vomiting intermittently and was complaining about stomach issues. We took her in to her doctor and when her blood work came back she had h. pylori antibodies. We had already been giving her prilosec at this time but we were informed we needed to give a stool sample, it came back negative. I was told that she could not do a breath test because of her age....why? Her symptoms are back along with tension headaches, teeth pain, weight loss, and depression. I feel bad cause she got better and I feel like I didn't follow through with this.

I feel sad to read your post. I think you should contact a good doctor.

I am not sure what your doctor meant by children not suitable for breath test. Here is an article about FDA approval on children as young as 3 years old to conduct breath test on H. pylori.

I think your daughter could be suffering from other diseases other than H. pylori. Anyway, let's fix one issue at a time. If H. pylori is truly negative, then she can proceed to other checkup.
