breath test

Breath tests are the most accurate way of detecting H.pylori without actually having an endoscopy (stomach examination). Breath tests are especially useful after treatment to make sure H.pylori is cured. Urea breath tests are known to be completely harmless. Either C14-urea or C13-urea tests are used. Read about them at the diagnosis section at http://www.helico.com/diag_breath.html where a diagram can be found. C14-urea breath tests use a radioactive tracer but such a tiny amount that it can be used safely at any age. It is a 15 minute test, convenient and inexpensive. The C13-urea test uses a stable isotope of carbon which is also harmless but requires two breath samples and takes about 30 minutes. Both tests have accuracy greater than 90%.

breath test

Post by luvbird »

Just noticed this thread and I just wanted to say that my doc dismisses breath and blood test and will only do stool tests as the most reliable and accurate way of testing . From what I have read on here could he be wrong ?

all the test is reliable if you know how to read the results. your doctor probably thinks that stool test is not affected by PPI which is claimed by most sales rep, but it may not be true. Since stool test is relying on bacteria load, PPI does reduce the bacteria load. So, it is still possible to get a false negative result. Similarly, breath test is relying on acidic stomach. PPI will reduce the acid and give false negative result to breath test. Blood test on the other hand, is detecting antibody in your blood. The thing is, the antibody will stay in your body for months or years before degrading out. So, a blood test is very accurate for the first use. It can not be used to determine if your bacteria has been eradicated or if you still currently infected.

Hi and thanks for your reply . My doctor does understand about the ppi's as he asked me to wait at least a month whilst off them before the stool test . its just that over here the stool test is considered the most accurate way of testing . I would like to have all three tests :-)
