How long do you need to be off PPI before breath test?

Breath tests are the most accurate way of detecting H.pylori without actually having an endoscopy (stomach examination). Breath tests are especially useful after treatment to make sure H.pylori is cured. Urea breath tests are known to be completely harmless. Either C14-urea or C13-urea tests are used. Read about them at the diagnosis section at http://www.helico.com/diag_breath.html where a diagram can be found. C14-urea breath tests use a radioactive tracer but such a tiny amount that it can be used safely at any age. It is a 15 minute test, convenient and inexpensive. The C13-urea test uses a stable isotope of carbon which is also harmless but requires two breath samples and takes about 30 minutes. Both tests have accuracy greater than 90%.

How long do you need to be off PPI before breath test?

Post by Elle86 »

My GI doctor said 10 days off PPI before endoscopy but he didn't say breath test. I've read here at least 7 days. Is that accurate? Also, do you get results back right away from a breath test or does it vary on where you get it down? I'm having an endoscopy monday at the hospital said my results from the biopsy could be 2-4 weeks.

about PPI and urea breath test, you can read this guideline here.

http://www.imvs.sa.gov.au/wps/wcm/conne ... OD=AJPERES

For breath test result, you do not get results back immediately. The breath will have to be sent to laboratory for analyse.

However, CLOtest, which test directly on your stomach biopsy during endoscopy, will give you result within 30 min.

Histology from biopsy will take 2-4 weeks.

Do you have to request for a clo test to be done or will they do it automatically?

It depends on the specialist. I guess there is no harm asking to make sure.

In your opinion, do you think being off of the PPI for 9 days is enough for an accurate result? I was taking 20 mg of omperazole. My GI dr said 10. The link you provided says 7. The lab I'm doing it at says 3 days. So I'm all confused. The test costs me $80 and it's more convienient for me to go on the 9th day of stopping rather than 10th.

I think 9 days should be more than enough. 3 days is enough to get your acid back up but probably not the bacteria load. If you have low bacteria load, you'll get false negative or borderline readings.

So, the idea is, the longer you stop the PPI, the better the breath test result.
